A Letter from the Executive Director

South Florida, it’s an exciting time for people who bicycle. Everywhere you go these days, you can expect to see adults and kids, commuters and athletes, women and men outside on bicycles. GoogleMaps just added a ‘By Bicycle’ option for planning trips, our First Lady has launched the Let’s Move campaign to promote physical activity and the World Health Organization is focused on promoting ciclovias (car-free street events) as a means to improving global health in 2010.

Closer to home, we are celebrating Bicycle Awareness and Action Month across Florida. New bike lanes are being striped, new bicycle shops are opening up and group rides of all kinds are being organized across our counties. Fellow friends of the bicycle, this is our time.

The South Florida Bike Coalition is our opportunity to unite our voices and support better bicycling in our neighborhoods. The SFBC is dedicated to giving everyone who rides a bicycle here the tools needed to ride better, more safely and more confidently. We seek to create a unified voice to defend our rights to the road, improve our recreational trails and promote a safer, cleaner, healthier environment for everyone.

Our friends to the north and west benefit tremendously from the work of our non-profit sister organizations, Transportation Alternatives, the Active Transportation Alliance, the San Francisco, LA County and Greater Philadelphia Bicycle Coalitions, just to name a few. Your SFBC leadership are proud members of the Florida Bicycle Association, and we also believe that South Florida deserves a strong, regional, membership-based organization that works to effect real, positive change on a local scale.

Soon, your SFBC will appeal to you to join us. Right now, we want to know more about what you want. I’m proud to be the SFBC’s first Executive Director and I look forward to hearing from you. Please contact me directly at SFBikeCoalition @yahoo.com.

Thank you! Ride Safe (and Ride Often!)
