The City of Miami Police Department borrowed a bicycle from our friends at Scoot, Skate & Bike this week and after just one night, had arrested 9 repeat offenders for stealing the bike from numerous locations. The South Florida Bike Coalition thanks the MPD for recognizing the problem of bicycle theft and working hard to deter it through effective law enforcement.
How MPD Cracks Down on Bicycle Thieves
Miami police borrowed a bicycle from a local shop and then left it propped up against restaurants, shops, residences around the city’s arts districts on Thursday evening. The bike was left unlocked and then was monitored by surveillance until it was stolen – 13 times. The setup resulted in arrests of 9 individuals and warnings or citations to others, says our source. It is a simple method of catching thieves and all it takes is a decision from a police department to focus on this issue – so important to so many of us.
The South Florida Bike Coalition thanks Miami PD for being proactive about the safety of our rides in our neighborhoods. One reason that many of you give for driving over riding for transportation is safety of your bicycle. Those of you who have had your bikes stolen tell us heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, blood-boiling stories. Let’s hope that other local police departments follow suit and that their efforts lead to fewer sad stories and safer communities for riding for all of us.
We encourage you to share this story with your local PD. Let us know what feedback you receive and if you have your own story for sharing here. Thank you – ride safe South Florida!
